Top Gun Summer State Championship: WR 10U Blue 16, NW Thunder 0

10U Blue went back on the diamond Saturday morning on the face of the sun at Middle Creek. The first game was a 16-0 victory over the North Wake Thunder. But the score wasn't the real story. The pitching or the defense or the hitting wasn't the real story. The real story was...does anyone recognize this guy?

JT's back! West Raleigh finally got back to long-awaited full health with the return of JT, who was able to hit on Saturday. And apparently that weightlifting regimen Giovanna had him on while he was out is paying dividends, but more on that later.

In this particular game, the Blue offense pounded out a dozen hits in three innings, jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first after Coach Sean lost a heated game of paper-rock-scissors to determine home team when the umpire didn't have a coin for the coin flip (note: yes, that actually happened), and got shutout innings from three different pitchers on the way to the three-inning victory.

The game also marked the return of the 10U Blue portable scoreboard, since word had been passed along that Giovanna would be in attendance and would, of course, want to know "WHAT'S THE SCORE?" What no one expected is that there would be a scorekeeping prodigy in attendance. That's right, Coach Adam now has an apprentice:

Game 1 10U Blue scoring plays
First inning
Bryce walked and stole second. Gavin cracked an RBI double, stole third, and scored on Chace's grounder, which he beat out to first. Andrew's single put runners at first and second. A passed ball moved up both runners. Wild pitches scored both Chace and Andrew. Banks walked, hustled into second, and then motored all the way to score from second on a wild pitch. Brady lined a one-out single, then stole second. A fielder's choice moved him to third. Joe walked and stole second. A wild pitch scored Brady and put Joe on third, and then another wild pitch scored Joe.
Score after one-half inning: WR 10U Blue 7, NW Thunder 0

Second inning
Bryce ripped a one-out double. Gavin singled him home, then stole second and third. Chace doubled home Gavin. Andrew beat out a fielder's choice, and then an error brought home Chace. Banks blasted an RBI double. Brady collected a two-out RBI with a single.
Score after one and a half innings: WR 10U Blue 12, NW Thunder 0

Third inning
Elias hit a one-out single. A wild pitch put him on second. JT walked. Asher singled. Bryce hit the deepest infield fly in baseball history, which was fielded by an outfielder, scoring Elias. Gavin smashed a three-run homer.
Score after two and a half innings: WR 10U Blue 16, NW Thunder 0

Pitching Performances
Colin started and pitched a scoreless first.

Elias fired a 1-2-3 second, ending it with a strikeout.

Ben closed it out and registered a pair of strikeouts in the third.

Game 1 Web Gems
  • Making Coach Kevin's heart flutter, Chace and Colin teamed up on a perfect 3-1 putout to end the first. Coach Kevin was rendered useless for the rest of the game as he rocked back and forth on the bucket and muttered, "PFP, PFP, PFP."
  • Gavin came across the middle to snag a high chopper and then made the good throw to first to retire the hitter in the second.
  • Gavin ran into the left-center gap to chase down a potential extra-base hit to end the game in the third.
